Francisco de Moure

Cultural background

Original title

Caballero orante de Beade
Ourense Province Archaeological Museum
Ourense, Galicia

An exceptional work by Francisco de Moure, representing a knight from the Order of Malta. It is an unusual composition in Spanish sculpture at the time of Philip III.

It presumably represents the Commander of Beade, Ribadavia and Mourentán, Don Fr. Fernando Manual de Ludueña. According to the 1608 protocol of Pedro de Lemos, the image comes from the Church of Beade. These and other references lead us to believe that it is the "Praying Knight of Beade", the one from the commissioned altarpiece. The helmet, which was independent, was lost.

It is a real work of art by Francisco de Moure, the sculptor from Ourense who brought about the transition from Mannerism to Baroque, between the 16th and 17th centuries.
