Original title

Torques de Sagrajas

This is one of the most outstanding pieces of all the prehistoric precious metalwork in Spain, and even in Europe.

Its weight is over two kilograms of practically pure gold. It was found near the ford in the Guadiana river, near the village of Sagrajas (Badajoz), and forms part of a set of items which includes other torques (necklaces) and four solid bracelets, all also made of gold. The location of this type of finding beside roads and places of transit is very common, and always outside inhabited places.

These torques are formed by two bands with a circular section, with a dovetail joint. The two bands are beaten with a hammer, welded together and decorated with geometric motifs carved with a burin. The clasp at one end is formed by a circular segment which has two pyramidal projections with a square section.
