Original title

Bote de Zamora

According to an inscription, the piece was commissioned by Alhaquen II for Subh, the mother of the eldest son of the Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba. It is notable for its delicate carving with strong highlights.

It is a cylindrical box with a domed top with an ivory knob. It has a conical top that is closed with a silver hinge and clasp. The whole surface is covered with ataurique (arabesque Arab ornamentation inspired in plant motifs) depicting leaves and palms, among which gazelles, peacocks and other birds are also visible. The decoration is framed by borders shaped as rope.
