Original title

Tablero de juego y fichas en pizarra

Natural slate slab with a board marked with incisions forming a grid, with game pieces made from the same material.

These intelligence and strategy games on a board from the Roman era are known as “tabula lusoria” or “tabula latrunculata”. At least two boards of this type are documented at Castro de Viladonga fort, one of which is almost complete, with a carved grid (irregular but clearly marked) where the piece or calculi were used, also made in slate.

Castro inhabitants could enjoy a similar game to draughts or “thief” (explaining the name “latrunculata”) which gives an idea of everyday life in the settlement between the 2nd and 5th centuries.
