This portrait of Hadrian dressed in military garb is one of the best surviving depictions of the emperor.

At chest height he bears a relief of the head of the gorgon Medusa, which he wore as an indication of his divine origin. The imperial mantle is thrown over his left shoulder and fastened by means of a large circular fibula (buckle). The sculpture was made between 135-140 A.D. and comes from Italica.
