The Dionysian rite involved the participation in festivities in honour of the god which were characterised by their licentiousness and excess. This altar is evidence of this.

The piece forms part of a series of three cylindrical altars featuring scenes of dancing Maenads (Bacchus' priestesses) and satyrs (mythological creatures with the face of a bearded man, goats legs and ears and a horse's tail) in honour of the god Bacchus. It is thought to date from around 10-15 A.D., and was found in the Theatre of Italica, whose construction was begun at the time of Augustus.
