Cultural background

Greek

Original title

Cratera

A krater, a vessel used for diluting water with wine, that shows how important it was for Athens artisans to carry out themes that fitted in with indigenous tastes.

The decoration of the scenes, the style of the figures and the diagram of the scene on the back of the krater enable us to attribute this item to the Black Thyrsus painter, dating from the second quarter of the 4th century BC. The iconography at the front is not typical of the usual characters and scenes in the representations of kraters imported into the Iberian society. It seems to be a Greek interpretation of an indigenous mythological scene, an Iberian infernal banquet, which is mixed with typical features of the artisan's iconography because he did not really understand the Iberian mythology.
