Cultural background

Original title

León iberorromano

Tombs guardians

Iberian-period sculpture of a lion, an animal associated with the funeral world, as a symbol of the continuance of life.

In the Roman world the lion still appears in funeral contexts. This type of lion, biting a human or animal head, used to be represented during the last years of the Republic and the Late Empire, that is, between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD.

Although the lion figure belongs to Mediterranean images and is present in the Iberian culture, guardian lions resting on heads appear frequently in Lazio and Veneto, where the tombs were kept. They have a strong symbolism linked with the fragility of life. Lions like this one appear very frequently in the Guadalquivir Valley, probably because of the influence of new funeral habits brought in by the Roman conquerors.
