Toledo

El Greco’s vision here is at its most objective, highlighted by the young man on the left who offers the viewer the plan of the city.

The complexity of the vision includes an allegory of the River Tagus as a figure holding a pitcher, and the city’s most significant religious image: the Virgin presenting the chasuble to San Ildefonso, the patron saint of the diocese of Toledo. The position of the Tavera Hospital is also worthy of note. Its depiction was inspired by the famous views of the city of Venice.

The painting shows the walls, the Bisagra, Alfonso IV and El Cambrón gates, the Alcázar fortress (now housing the Army Museum), the Cathedral and numerous church and convent towers. Outside the walled area the painting shows San Servando Castle, Alcántara Bridge and, to the right, the San Ildefonso and San Bartolomé Monasteries.
