A portrait in the Apostolate series, which uses mediaeval iconography to illustrate the saint.

Although he interprets it freely, El Greco follows the mediaeval iconography, based on the Golden Legend a 14th century work by Jacopo di Voragine. He represents the apostle holding a goblet with a little dragon inside, alluding to a passage in the book describing his escape from poisoning. The colours are the traditional ones identified with the saint: a green tunic and rose-coloured cloak. The highly expressive nature of the figure can also be seen in other apostle series, such as that in the Sacristy of Toledo Cathedral and the Fine Arts Museum of Oviedo, where the saint is represented without a goblet.
