This unfinished work is unique because it is not repeated in any other of the series of apostles, where it is replaced by that of Saint Luke.

The ghostly appearance of the figure wrapped in white clothing is particularly notable. However, technical studies have revealed that we may be seeing the grisaille used as a base for later painting, which was left uncompleted. The effect highlights the artist's modern creative force.

In his right hand the saint holds the knife used in his flaying; in his left, a chain holding a little devil, recalling the mediaeval tradition that he chained the demon that had kidnapped the daughter of the king of Armenia.
