This is an important example of the portrait work of El Greco, in which his Venetian influences are mixed with the sumptuous fashions of the Spanish court.

Of particular note is the lively expression of contained serenity in the face of Diego de Covarrubias, who like his brother Antonio, was highly educated and occupied important positions in the church hierarchy.

El Greco never actually met him, as he died a few months before his arrival in Toledo. He was inspired by a much colder portrait of him by Alonso Sánchez Coello, which is also in the museum's collection.
