This is one of the examples of the El Greco's major contribution to the history Spanish portraiture. His works give us a magnificent gallery of the faces of Toledo society.

The portraits are generally busts set against a neutral background, with three-quarter profiles that reveal a profound psychological insight. El Greco’s realistic approach to his subjects, combined with the range of colours used, made him a forerunner to Velázquez’s work as portrait painter.

This work was commissioned by Pedro Salazar de Mendoza, the administrator and head of the Hospital of Tavera.

Antonio de Covarrubias was a leading humanist in the Toledo society of his time. He formed part of the circle of El Greco's friends, which explains the intimate nature of the work.
