Golden Age

Original title

Cervantes House-Museum
Valladolid, Castile-Leon

This is a reconstruction of what may have been the writer's study. The room contains his desk and work chair, writing implements and two wastepaper baskets.

It is decorated with paintings based on the life of the knight errant. One, by Valero Iriarte, depicts Don Quixote and his squire Sancho witnessing the burial of the shepherd Grisóstomo; the other, by Miguel Jadraque portrays the visit by the priest and the barber to Don Quixote.

The study has a compartment which served as a bedroom, equipped with a bed with a canopy and curtains, as well as a table and chairs. On the wall there is a modest 17th-century painting depicting Saint Francis, the saint to whom the writer addressed his prayers; Cervantes was at one point a tertiary member of the Franciscan order. Other items of furniture include a magnificent alabaster sculpture of the Virgin of La Leche, dating from the 16th century.
