This book enjoyed extraordinary success in its time, and became a reference work which was consulted long after its initial publication.

In this copy the engravings are illuminated by hand and the prints are of great artistic quality. It also contains handwritten annotations by past users. The author, whose real name was Jacopo Filippo Foresti, combined religious life with historical research. This book was intended as a treatise on universal history, and includes a compilation of works by earlier historians.

It starts with the creation of the world and follows in chronological order until 1490. It narrates the most important occurrences in various countries and cities, as well as the events befalling kings and other illustrious figures. It also records Ferdinand and Isabella's struggles for the city of Granada.
