Cultural background

Golden Age

Original title

Obras de D. Luis de Góngora
Spanish National Library

Manuscript copy of Góngora's poems by Antonio Chacón, with whom the author probably collaborated. It is an essential document to transmit the work by this writer.

Góngora was not interested in having his poems printed and did not keep the autographs of his texts. However, thanks to this copy, known as "Chacón's manuscript", an organised, reliable and polished set of Góngora's poems was achieved, with the exact date of each one of the texts. It is also a masterpiece of calligraphy from the Golden Age.

Antonio Chacón selected a high quality bone-coloured parchment and hired a splendid calligrapher and an expert illustrator. The result was so satisfactory that it was deemed fit for the person for whom it was made - the Count-Duke of Olivares. There was no more news of the manuscript until the bibliophile and scholar Pascual de Gayangos purchased all three volumes in 1857.
