Cultural background

Original title

Libro de los gorriones : colección de argumentos, ideas y planes de cosas diferentes que se concluirán o no según sople el viento
Spanish National Library

The Book of the Sparrows changes the face of the edition of works of Bécquer and is a revision of the Rhymes.

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer’s works started to be published after his death in 1870 and it was his friends Narciso Campillo and Augusto Ferrán who organised and reviewed the originals. In 1914, Franz Schneider makes this autograph manuscript known. It is valuable because there are new poems, they are organised differently and the authorship of the many corrections of the text appears, because most of them are by Narciso Campillo and not Bécquer.

The subtitle of the manuscript seems to explain the author's purpose of creating a large manuscript and considering it a draft. The text contains the Symphonic Introduction and the incomplete essay "The Stone Woman". After 500 blank pages, on page 529, Bécquer rewrites the Rhymes by heart. The original document disappeared when his patron's home - the minister Luis González Bravo - was looted.
