This is one of the great Spanish Renaissance treatises and is a valuable source of information on the development of instrumental music and the evolution of musical thought throughout the 16th century.
This first edition is a summary (Book One) of what were intended to be four separate books. The book entitled 'Arte tripharia' was published one year later. The term 'tripharia' refers to Bermudo's classification of musical instruments into three groups: 'natural' (the human voice), 'artificial' ('touching' or string instruments), and 'intermediate' (wind instruments, including the organ).
This edition includes a series of original compositions for educational purposes designed to teach the compositional techniques which were common at the time. These combine many of the treatises of the earlier editions.
