This collection of verse consists of works by poets who were contemporaries of Hernando del Castillo and moved in Valencian circles, where they dealt with a wide range of issues.
Hernando del Castillo was a Castilian living in Valencia and a lover of poetry who around 1490 began to collect all the compositions he found from the time of Juan de Mena through to his day. His purpose was to make a selection of this material and organise it by authors, poetic genres and subjects (works on devotion and morality, works on love, songs, romances, fantasies and jousting tales, glosses on refrains, carols, questions and comic works). The result was quite different, however, and a series of compositions were inserted by poets from Valencia and the area at the time of Castillo.
