Original title

Vista general de la ciudad de Ourense

This engraving offers evidence of the growth of the city of Ourense during the 20th century, when it began with 10,626 inhabitants in 1900 and had grown to 100,000 by the year 2000.

This panoramic view was first published in the late 19th century in the periodical 'La Ilustración Española y Americana'. It shows a small provincial capital with views of some of the city's emblematic buildings and geographical features which today have been enveloped by the growth of the town.
The cathedral tower can be seen in the centre of the image. To the left, the convent of San Francisco, and to the right, the now defunct Hospital of San Roque, founded in the 16th century beside the landfill which was planted with the trees which today give shade to the Alameda avenue.
