Original title

Título de barbero flebotomiano de Juan de Castro, vecino de Allariz

This document provides information on the activities relating to this socio-sanitary profession during the Modern Era.

Juan de Castro, a resident of Allariz, obtained this licence in Madrid in 1591 authorising him to practice the trade of barber-blood-letter. He was therefore issued with this colourful diploma with its blood-red border which gives an idea of the type of techniques practiced by these professionals. These could include everything from pulling teeth and extracting blood for therapeutic purposes, through to a simple shave.
Allariz was an important town in the Middle Ages, and by 1591 it was known to have 943 families, with its inhabitants dedicated to a wide range of activities.
