Most of Coumbus' private letters conserved in the Archive are addressed to his son Diego.

These began in 1505, when he was relieved of his post as viceroy and governor of the Indies and replaced by Nicolás de Ovando. This marked the start of a long period of appeals against the Crown which intensified on his return from his last trip in 1504. This gave rise to a correspondence between the explorer, ill in Seville and his son Diego, who had established himself at Court in order to safeguard his interests. On his death, Columbus appointed his son heir to his estate.
