Cards for this popular pastime, made by the factory which exclusively controlled the production destined for America.

Card games were widely enjoyed throughout all echelons of society. Some were legal and others, such as games of chance and gambling, were prohibited.

In 1552, Philip II established what was known as an "estanco" in the Indies, that is, the monopoly in the production or sale of a particular item. This "estanco" on playing cards was the source of exceptional revenues for the Royal Treasury. It was only possible to play with authorised packs. The factory at Macharaviaya (Malaga), backed by the all-powerful Minister of the Indies, José de Gálvez, and run by Félix Solesio, from Finale (Italy), had exclusive rights to the production of cards for the whole of America from 1776.
