Original title

Una comedia ligera

A novel by Eduardo Mendoza mixing a comedy about bourgeois customs and manners with a detective thriller.

Published in 1996, “Una comedia ligera” is a novel half way between a thriller and a comedy of manners. This work, set in post-war Barcelona, recounts the life of a comedy writer who is beginning to go out of style and who is experiencing the difficulty of becoming old, with consequent problems in love. The protagonist’s vital process is cut short by a series of crimes, which give the work tones of a detective novel.

Eduardo Mendoza displays all of his talent and literary resourcefulness in this novel, in its narrative coherence, skilful description and the elaborate portrayal of characters and situations. It won France’s Best Foreign Book Award in 1998.
