Original title

Pan y toros

One of the emblematic zarzuela operettas in the composer, musicologist and Madrid orchestra conductor Francisco Asenjo Barbieri’s musical production.

It is a three-act zarzuela with a libretto in verse by José Picón. The plot centres on late 18th-century Spain and retells a liberal conspiracy for King Charles IV to ignore the influences of his Prime Minister Manuel de Godoy. Historical characters make an appearance such as Francisco de Goya, the politician Jovellanos and Godoy’s lover Pepita Tudó.

It is an historical fresco put to music by Barbieri who delves into the roots of the popular and Goyaesque. In this way, he highlights the respect of the 18th-century ditty as well as other Spanish musical folklore such as the bolero, the jota, the seguidilla, the paso doble, the gavotte and the contra dance.
