Original title

Novelas ejemplares

A collection of short novels of a moralising character written by Miguel de Cervantes between 1590 and 1612.

A collection of short novels by Miguel de Cervantes written between 1590 and 1612, and published in 1613 as a set edited by Juan de la Cuesta, who wanted to take advantage of the popularity of the first part of “Don Quixote”.

It is made up of 12 novels, and the term ejemplares (moral or instructive) was chosen for two reasons: because they were the first novels that reflected the Italian fashion of the time; and second, because the stores were didactic and moral in character.

They can be divided into the realist and idealist, with the realist closer to the Italian fashion. Among the best known are: “Rinconete y Cortadillo”, “La gitanilla”, “El coloquio de los perros” and “El amante liberal”.
