This splendid work of Renaissance composer Cristóbal de Morales, was discovered in a codex of the cathedral of Toledo only recently, in 2002.
Michael Noone, founder and director of the Ensemble Plus Quartet, a British vocal group specialized in Renaissance music, discovered it. In 2002 he received an invitation from the registrar of the cathedral of Toledo to study a polyphonic manuscript that had been inaccessible until then, as it was seriously damaged.
In the so-called “Codex 25,” Noone finally discovered, after painstaking restoration efforts, that it contained 20 works of Cristóbal de Morales, this one among them, the first recording of which was made by the Ensemble Plus Quartet itself.
It is a hymn to the Virgin Mary that demonstrates all the composing power of Morales. Intensity, devotion and intimacy make this work a true musical pearl.
