The suffering and tragedy of 'Medea' served to establish the reputation of José Granero.
More than two decades since its creation, 'Medea' has become the most often represented work in Spanish dance. This fact has been a decisive contribution to the reputation of the choreographer and dancer José Granero, who here produces one of his most moving and elaborate works. He received the invaluable assistance of Miguel Narros with the libretto and artistic direction, while Manolo Sanlúcar was responsible for the music. The show was created for the Spanish National Ballet under María de Ávila, and was first performed with Manuela Vargas in the role of Medea and Antonio Alonso as Jason.
Some of the top names on the national dance scene who have performed the work include Maribel Gallardo, Lola Greco, Ángel Rojas, Carlos Rodríguez, Ana González, José Antonio Ruiz, Luis Ortega, Merche Esmeralda and Antonio Canales. All these considerations in 1984 led the Metropolitan Opera House in New York to award 'Medea' the prize for the best ballet of the season.
