Original title

Los santos inocentes

One of the best-known works by the writer Miguel Delibes, it recreates the rural setting of Extremadura and was widely read in its day.

Against a backdrop of the social injustice so prevalent in the rural world of Extremadura after the Spanish Civil War, 'The holy innocents' was first printed in 1981.

The novel describes the everyday life on a farm in Extremadura, where the masters –genuine feudal lords– exploit and degrade the unfortunate local people. It exmplifies several of the recurring themes in Delibes' narrative work: the oppression by the dominant social classes, the disdain and humiliations meted out to servants, and the complete lack of education of the lower classes. The author used different linguistic registers to portray the social hierarchy on the farm, as well as endowing the protagonists with diametrically opposed worldviews.

In 1984 Mario Camus directed the film adaptation of the novel, for which its main characters, Francisco Rabal and Alfredo Landa, won the award for Best Male Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.
