Los Pirineos

Original title

Els Pirineus

This opera, in reality a trilogy, is part of the ‘Renaixença’ current, a cultural movement between Romanticism and Nationalism which appeared in Catalonia in the 19th century.

The extensive music work by composer Felipe Pedrell reached its height in the early 20th century. He presented the full trilogy of Los Pirineus at the Gran Teatro de Liceo theatre in Barcelona in 1902 – an opera in three acts with a prologue.

It is based on the tragic poem of the same name from 1893 by Catalan playwright and politician Víctor Balaguer. Pedrell’s intent was to create a new lyricism to serve as a reference for incipient Catalan nationalism (the influence of Wagner’s ‘Tetralogy’ being clear). The mediaeval setting with troubadours, Cathars and ancient counts, and the Catalan text are two of its essential features.
