Los intereses creados

Jacinto Benavente, one of the great 20th century writers, dramatises the story of two rogues trying to marry a rich noblewoman.

"The Bonds of Interest" is one of Jacinto Benavente's best-known plays and was premiered on 9 December 1907 in the Lara Theatre in Madrid. According to the writer Dámaso Alonso, the source of inspiration for this play was "El Caballero de Illescas" by Lope de Vega.

Based on the characters and prototypes of Italian comedy, the author presents a couple of rogues, Leandro and Crispín, who try to trick a rich heiress into marrying one of them.

Thanks to this play, Benavente consolidated his career and achieved the recognition of cultural institutions and authorities. The author even played the part of Crispín once, when the play was put on during the Spanish Civil War.
