This work is considered one of the towering works of Spanish narrative of the 20th century. Published between 1957 and 1962, it is divided into 'El señor llega' (1957), 'Donde da la vuelta el aire' (1960) and 'La Pascua triste' (1962). It offers a portrait of the social reality in Galicia two years before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Throughout this profound social analysis, the author focuses on the changes which have occurred since the mid 19th century through to the complete establishment of the capitalist system.
With the first instalment, 'El señor llega', the author won the Novel Award from the Juan March Foundation. The trilogy did not reach the height of its popularity until 1982, when it was made into a television series for Spanish public television by Jesús Navascués, and directed by Rafael Moreno Alba.
