Original title

Los diamantes de la corona

One of the first great zarzuelas in Spanish music and one of the best compositions by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, the conductor and composer from Madrid.

Premiered in the Circo Theatre in Madrid on 15 September 1834, it is a zarzuela in three acts, to a libretto in verse by Francisco Camprodón, adapted from the comic opera with the same name presented in Paris ten years before. This one had been composed by Daniel Auber based on the play with the same name by Eugène Scribe, to a libretto by Jules de Saint-Georges and Scribe himself.

Based on this, Barbieri composed several beautiful musicals, some of them influenced by the Italian opera tradition and others by the most famous composers at the time - like Pascual Arrieta - where we can also see Spanish tradition, such as the famous bolero "Niñas que a vender flores vais a Granada", which appears in the second act.
