Original title

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer writes the most important book of Spanish Romanticism and one of the great classics of Spanish literature of all time.

Series of short stories that the author published separately or in groups from 1860 in the “El Contemporáneo” newspaper. In this crowning work, not only of Romanticism but of Spanish literature, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer presents short stories characterised by a practical and easy to understand language and for addressing a markedly romantic theme. These stories usually deal with the Middle Ages, popular stories, mystery and darkness, among other many aspects. But landscapes, whether natural or urban, also play a key role, anticipating two literary trends that would be all the rage: Naturalism and Realism.
Over time, the publications compiling the “Leyendas” were released, both separately and together with other compositions by the author. The version considered definitive, published in 1871, includes twenty-five stories.
