Las islas invitadas

The poet Manuel Altolaguirre added to this collection of poems over a period of years, as though it were a living organism, thus making it his most representative poetic work.

In the successive editions of this work (1936, 1944 and 1946) the number of poems increased until reaching a final figure of 137, which included practically all of the first stage of his poetic production. This work is characterised by its spontaneity, clarity of expression and its curious magic, with love as its main theme.

The book is divided into 13 titles, under which Altolaguirre grouped the poems that he considered best represented his career, some of which had already been published earlier in other poetry collections or magazines. It is therefore not surprising that the last edition has a heterogeneous appearance, in the manner of a summary of the culminated works by this avant-garde –sometimes neo-Romantic– poet and member of the Generation of '27.
