Literature, Narrative

Original title

La verdad sobre el caso Savolta

A thriller novel set in Barcelona at the end of the Franco period, with which Eduardo Mendoza began his literary career.

Eduardo Mendoza’s first novel. It was published in 1975 under the title of “Soldiers of Catalonia”. However, due to the Franco regime’s censorship suspicions, the title was changed to “The truth about the Savolta case”. In the novel, the Barcelona author uses a thriller format to tell the story of the murder of a Catalan industrialist named Savolta, made rich by arms trafficking in the First World War.

The novel makes a critical analysis of the economic, political, social and cultural ambiance of Barcelona at that time, contrasting the bourgeois world with incipient workers’ movements.

As General Franco died just months after the novel saw the light of day, it was to become a symbolic precursor of the democratic transition. A highly renowned work, it won the 1976 Critics’ Award.
