Original title

La tabernera del puerto

A late and masterly zarzuela, in which the traditional seaside atmosphere becomes art.

This zarzuela, which on some occasions has also been defined as a sailors' romance, is made up of three acts, the last one divided into two scenes. The music was composed by Pablo Sorozábal to a libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández-Shaw. It was first performed on 6 May 1936 in the Tívoli Theatre in Barcelona.
The plot takes place in a typical fishing village on the Cantabrian coast. Seaside settings serve as an ideal place for this story of love and passion, of characters who live outside the law, of misfortunes and tragedies that are about to happen.
Amongst the songs, romances and solos or choral pieces, the romance or aria "It cannot be" stands out. It has been sung spectacularly by prestigious tenors such as José Carreras, the well-remembered Alfredo Kraus and more often by Plácido Domingo.
