Original title

La rosa del azafrán

Popular folklore, rural setting and classic plot for a zarzuela that became very popular and is well-loved by people who like this genre.

It is a zarzuela in two acts and six scenes, with music by the maestro and composer Jacinto Guerrero to a libretto by Guillermo Fernández-Shaw and Federico Romero, premiered on 14 March 1930 in the Calderón Theatre in Madrid. It is based freely on the comedy "The Gardener's Dog", by the great Golden Age playwright Félix Lope de Vega.
This comedy of affairs, which deals with the classic theme of love between people of different social classes, adapts the play by Lope de Vega, setting it the region of La Mancha. The title of the play is taken partly from there because saffron ("azafrán") is a very traditional spice in that area.
