This lyrical one-act comedy, split into three parts and with a text in verse, is considered to be one of the best works from the so-called género chico popular operetta genre.

The libretto was written by José López Silva, and expert in Spanish a typically Madrid topics, and Carlos Fernández-Shaw, a cultured playwright and poet.

It is a faithful portrait of the neighbourhood settings in Madrid tenement courtyards (the ‘troublemaker’ is Mari Pepa, beautiful, uninhibited and bright) which the compose Ruperto Chapí and his prodigious natural gift for creating situations and characters provided with many legendary numbers in a score including the ‘cultured’ and the popular.

The most renowned numbers are the seguidillas Al pie de tu ventana, the duo by the main characters ¿Por qué de mis ojos los tuyos retiras and the country guajiras Cuando clava mi Moreno.
