Original title

La Regenta

First work by Leopoldo Alas ‘Clarín’ and culmination of 19th century novel in Spain.

Debut by the novelist Leopoldo Alas ‘Clarín’, published in two volumes in 1884 and 1885. According to the author, “La Regenta” was written as a series of separate articles. It is considered Clarín’s masterpiece, the high point of Spanish novel in the 19th century and of Spanish literary realism. The author narrates the gruesome story of Ana Ozores, who desperate with the emptiness and monotony of her life opts to escape reality through two routes: mysticism and an unbridled love passion. The work was considered scandalous at the time.
A television series directed by Fernando Méndez Leite and a film by Gonzalo Suárez have been made based on the novel, both with the same title as the work by ‘Clarín’.
