Juan Mayorga

Original title

La lengua en pedazos

The 'La lengua en pedazos' (The Tongue in Pieces) marks the debut of Juan Mayorga as a theatre director. With this work the author won the 2013 National Dramatic Literature Award.

The playwright Juan Mayorga examines the mystical figure of Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582), a woman who staunchly defended her convictions despite the pressures imposed by the times in which she lived. The author offers a vision of the nun from a lucid and contemporary perspective in this work which is in some ways connected with the finest examples of Castilian literature.

In 'La lengua en pedazos', the action takes place in the kitchens of a convent, where a dialectic battle is struck up between the nun and an inquisitor who becomes a kind of alter ego of the main character. An inquisitor who hems her in with uncomfortable questions, confronts her at difficult times in her life, and sparks the flame of doubt in her heart.
