Lope de Vega

Original title

La dama boba

Very modern play by Lope de Vega which criticises the role of women of his time.

A play by Lope de Vega, written and premiered in 1613. It was published in 1617 as part of the "Novena parte de las comedias" compilation, considered to be the first edition in which the playwright intervened personally.

A play written when the author was mature, presenting the story of Finea and Nise, two women who are victims of their chauvinist society. But while one of them turns to writing in order to calm her hatred, the other remains impassive. The calm environment at home is broken when they both fall in love with the same man.

"The Stupid Lady" is a proof of the playwright's modernity, especially with the criticism of women's role at the time, who were subordinate to the father or the mother, and with its innovative view of love, which included sensuality and passion as indissoluble parts.
