Original title

La ciudad de los prodigios

Eduardo Mendoza gives a free account of the ambience in Barcelona between 1888 and 1929.

“La ciudad de los prodigios”, published in 1986, is the most ambitious and well known work by the Barcelona author, Eduardo Mendoza. In it, he gives a free account of Barcelona’s evolution between the Universal Exhibitions of 1888 and 1929. The plot turns around Onofre Bouvilla, an archetype of the popular classes who, thanks to his dedication, will become one of the richest men in Spain. Both the period represented and the novel’s themes lead to comparison with “La febre d’or” (“Gold Fever”) by Narcís Oller.

It was awarded the City of Barcelona Prize in 1987 and Best Book of the Year by the “Lire” magazine in France in 1988. Eleven years later, Mario Camus made a film adaptation of the book (1999).
