Original title

La barraca

In this novel set in Valencia, the writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez recreates the world of the Valencian farming communities and the bitter social conflicts which erupted between farm labourers and landowners.

Literary critics place the figure of the novelist Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, perhaps the leading exponent of Spanish naturalism, in the late 19th century. Blasco himself acknowledged the influence of the French author Émile Zola –the naturalist writer par excellence– in some of his regional novels.

This work belongs to the novels in his Valencian cycle, at the start of his literary career when these naturalistic traits are most evident. In 'La Barraca', the naturalistic ideal can clearly be seen in the narrative technique and in the reaffirmation of the influence of the environment on human beings' character and behaviour, as well as in the radical perversity of the 'idyllic' nature of rural life.
