Original title

L'Auca del senyor Esteve

Revolutionary book by Santiago Rusiñol in which he combines pictures and text to write about the ascent of Catalan bourgeoisie and the Modernist conception of artists.

This Modernist novel, published for the first time in 1907, was devised by the artist Santiago Rusiñol, with the help of Ramón Casas for the graphics and Gabriel Alomar for the text.

It is a very innovative book because it combines the 19th century painting of local customs and the auca ("hallelujah") genre, made up of a series of pictures accompanied by verses. In this case, the book is made up of 27 pictures with their own metric compositions - two lines and consonant rhyme, called rodolins.

Rusiñol tells how Señor Esteve, his father's alter ego, becomes an archetype of Catalan bourgeoisie, but is not happy that his son wants to be painter. In this auca, Rusiñol expresses the relationship between artists and society in the Modernist period.
