Original title

Kiu

With this opera, based on the farce "Zero Temperature" by the playwright Alfonso Vallejo, the composer Luis de Pablo opened up new paths for Spanish opera.

Composed between 1979 and 1982, "Kiu" is based on the farce "Zero Temperature" by Alfonso Vallejo, a stifling and disturbing piece which earned Vallejo the Fastenrath Theatre Award in 1980.

The plot takes place in a train carriage, in which four people with psychological problems are travelling to a kind of promised land called "Kiu", which in the end is just another mental institution that is darker than the one they have just left. The aim is to make people reflect on the ambiguous concepts of sanity and insanity.

With this disturbing story, Luis de Pablo created one of the most significant operas in the Spanish scene during the second half of the 20th century. The vocal treatment, the dramatic movement and the arrangement of the orchestra stand out.
