The greguería, a very personal literary genre, was the most genuine creation by the unclassifiable writer, humorist, journalist and intellectual Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
The greguería can be defined as a witty prose composition with a personal, surprising and sometimes humorous view of life. Although he published several books on greguerías, the style influenced the rest of his prose.
Gómez de la Serna himself defined it as a new genre, using these words: "The audacity to define what cannot be defined, to capture fleetingness, to be right about what may be true for no one, or for everyone."
A greguería is a momentary impression of something that is produced in your imagination, creating unpredictable associations, an intuitive way of perceiving the universe. The consecutive "-isms"- of avant-garde, imaginist poetry and oriental poetic forms can be seen in this literary genre.
