Fortunata y Jacinta

A classic par excellence from Benito Pérez Galdós and a masterpiece of Spanish literary realism.

Fortunata and Jacinta, published in four volumes between 1886 and 1887, culminated the realist stage of Benito Pérez Galdós and is considered to be the author’s most representative work. Over the more than one thousand pages, Pérez Galdós presents a love story where human relationships, deception and adultery play a major role. The leitmotiv of the text is the main character, Juan Santa Cruz, a rich young man who becomes involved in a love triangle with Jacinta, a girl from a good family, and Fortunata, a beautiful young woman from the lower class. The author also ensures he offers a general view of life in Madrid in the 19th century, as well as showing society in the 1st Republic and the Bourbon Restoration.
