Original title

Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea

An epic poem by Luis de Góngora about Polyphemus and Galatea, in which he lays the foundations for culteranismo or gongorismo (highly ornamental writing).

Based on Greek mythology, and following Ovid's "Metamorphoses", Góngora presents us the love of the cyclops Polyphemus for the nymph Galatea, who rejects him due to his appearance and coarseness.

Written in ottava rima, the author uses symmetry, metaphors of metaphors, hyperbatons, periphrases, Latin phrases, learned expressions and many other resources that with time would become features of his style. One of the elements that make this work so modern is the fact that it was not conceived with any moral or didactic aims, thus breaking with the conventions for literary epics.
