Original title

Escenas matritenses

Ramón Mesonero Romanos describes and pays homage to the people and customs of the Madrid of his birth.

'Escenas matritenses' represents the culmination of Mesonero Romanos' interest in the customs, traditions and people of the city of his birth, Madrid. In this work the author recreates a series of typical vignettes from the life of the Madrid of the time, such as 'The Pilgrimage of San Isidro', and 'Carnival Tuesday and Ash Wednesday'. He also provides sketches of some of the city's most typical characters, such as 'The Short-sighted Lover', 'The Barber of Madrid' and the 'Guesthouse Landlady'. Perhaps one of the most interesting features of his work is the recreation of some of the fashionable settings of the time, as in his work 'Romanticism and the Romantics', where the author casts a critical eye over the group to which he himself belongs.
